A Great Man of God – Biblical Perspectives from the KJV
A great man of God, according to the Bible, is a person who exhibits unwavering faith, righteousness, and devotion to God’s will. Throughout the scriptures, we encounter numerous men of God whose lives serve as timeless examples of how to live according to divine principles. Whether through acts of bravery, humility, leadership, or servanthood, these individuals stand out for their deep commitment to the Lord. Let’s explore some key attributes that define a great man of God, drawing from examples in the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible.
1. Faith and Trust in God
A great man of God is known by his faith, which is a cornerstone of his relationship with the Almighty. One of the most prominent examples of faith in the Bible is Abraham. He is often referred to as the “father of faith” because of his complete trust in God. In Genesis 12, Abraham obeys God’s call to leave his homeland without knowing where he would go. His willingness to trust God’s promise, even when told to sacrifice his son Isaac (Genesis 22), demonstrates a faith that is total and unyielding. As a result, God made an everlasting covenant with Abraham, promising that his descendants would become a great nation.
Similarly, a great man of God today must place his trust in the Lord, even when the path ahead seems uncertain. Hebrews 11:6 reminds us, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
2. Obedience to God’s Commandments
Obedience is another defining quality of a great man of God. The Bible shows that those who follow God’s commandments are blessed beyond measure. Consider Moses, who is often regarded as the most humble man who ever lived (Numbers 12:3). Moses’ greatness lay not only in his leadership over the Israelites but also in his consistent obedience to God’s instructions. From leading the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery to delivering the Ten Commandments, Moses’ life was marked by submission to God’s will.
Moses’ unwavering obedience in the face of great adversity, even when the Israelites doubted or disobeyed, set him apart as a faithful servant. He knew that his strength came from the Lord and continually sought God’s guidance.
In our own lives, obedience to God may require making difficult decisions or standing firm in our faith when others oppose us. As Jesus said in John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
3. Humility and Servant Leadership
Great men of God understand the importance of humility. King David, for instance, was described as a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). Despite his eventual rise to kingship, David’s journey began in humility as a shepherd boy. He showed trust in God during his confrontation with Goliath, declaring, “The battle is the Lord’s” (1 Samuel 17:47). Even as king, David repeatedly sought God’s counsel and repented when he sinned.
David’s humility was not a sign of weakness but rather an acknowledgment of God’s authority and power over his life. A great man of God does not seek glory for himself but instead gives all glory to the Lord. In James 4:10, we are reminded, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”
4. Boldness in the Face of Persecution
A great man of God does not fear persecution. He boldly proclaims the truth, regardless of the consequences. Consider Daniel, who continued to pray to God despite the king’s decree that made such worship illegal (Daniel 6). Daniel’s commitment to God placed him in the lion’s den, but his faith protected him. God sent an angel to shut the lions’ mouths, and Daniel emerged unscathed.
Another example is the Apostle Paul, whose boldness in preaching the gospel led him to imprisonment, beatings, and shipwrecks. Yet, Paul remained steadfast, declaring in Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.” Like Paul, a great man of God today must remain courageous in standing for the truth, even when the world is hostile.
5. A Life of Prayer and Communion with God
Finally, a great man of God is one who maintains a close relationship with the Lord through prayer. Elijah, one of the greatest prophets, demonstrated the power of prayer when he called upon God to send fire from heaven (1 Kings 18:36-38). His prayer life not only allowed him to perform miracles but also helped him endure great trials.
Jesus himself, though divine, modeled a life of prayer. In Luke 5:16, it is written, “And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.” The closer a man of God is to the Lord, the more equipped he is to handle life’s challenges and fulfill his purpose.
Conclusion
The Bible presents many examples of great men of God who exemplified faith, obedience, humility, boldness, and a life of prayer. These qualities, when embraced, help us to live in accordance with God’s will and reflect His glory in our lives. Whether we are leading others or quietly serving in the background, the call to greatness in God’s eyes is a call to live a life centered on Him, filled with love, devotion, and unwavering trust.
In the end, greatness in God’s kingdom is not about worldly success or recognition, but about living a life that honors Him in all that we do. As the Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 16:13, “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.”
