Background: The term “Bui Doi” is a Vietnamese phrase for young, transient children. The phrase is related to the Vietnamese word for “dust,” and was coined in reference to the offspring of American GI’s and Vietnamese women. These children were often abandoned and marginalized by both the military society of the time and the local Vietnamese culture as well.

After returning from Vietnam, John Thomas, who works for an aid organization to reunite Vietnam veterans with their children, gives a speech in which he basically says, “Guys… we’ve shirked our responsibilities.”
